What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focused on grappling, ground control, and submissions. It's a self-defense system and a sport that teaches effective techniques for all body types and experience levels.

Do I need to be in good shape to start BJJ?Not at all! Our classes are designed to improve your fitness over time. Come as you are—BJJ is for everyone, and you’ll build strength and endurance as you train.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu effective for self-defense?Yes, BJJ is considered effective for self-defense, especially in situations where the confrontation goes to the ground. BJJ teaches techniques for controlling and neutralizing opponents without relying on striking.

Can I train BJJ if I have no previous martial arts experience?Absolutely. Many people start BJJ with no prior martial arts experience. Classes are typically structured to accommodate beginners, and you'll progress at your own pace.

Can I try a class before committing to a membership?Yes, we offer a one-week free trial for new members. This gives you a chance to get a feel for the classes and our community before signing up.

Are there any additional costs?Your membership covers all classes, but you'll need to purchase a gi if you plan to train in gi classes. We occasionally hold seminars and events, which may have an extra fee.

What should I expect in my first Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class at Attitude Bjj in Christchurch?Your first class will likely involve a introduction to the trainers and a mentor to help you through your next stages, we will go through warm-ups, basic techniques, and possibly some light sparring (rolling). Don't worry if you feel overwhelmed—it's normal. Everyone was a beginner at some point.

What should I wear to my first class?For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing—like a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. We’ll discuss gi (uniform) options.

How often should I train?We recommend starting with 2-3 classes per week, but feel free to adjust as you get comfortable. Training frequency depends on your personal schedule and goals. Consistency is key to improvement!

Do you have classes for kids?While at this stage we do run kids classes however we plan on offering kids classes in the future, keep your eyes peeled on our facebook page for updates.

What is open mat?Open mat sessions are a time when members can train freely without structured instruction. It’s a great chance to practice techniques, roll with partners, and build community.

How long are classes?Classes typically last one hour, with open mat sessions for extra practice time afterward.

Can I train both gi and no-gi?Absolutely! We offer both gi and no-gi classes, so you can experience the full range of BJJ techniques.

What's the etiquette for rolling (sparring) with higher belts?Approach higher belts with respect. When rolling, focus on defense and survival rather than trying to "win." Higher belts will often provide guidance and feedback during and after the roll.

Is it okay to tap out during training?Absolutely. Tapping out is a crucial part of BJJ. It's a signal to your training partner that you concede the match and helps prevent injuries. There's no shame in tapping—it's a learning opportunity.
